YOGA SCOTLAND APPOINTED GOVERNING BODY FOR YOGA IN SCOTLAND
Yoga Scotland has been appointed the governing body for yoga in Scotland by
sportscotland.
Established in 1973, Yoga Scotland provides teacher training and on-going
training services and support to around 300 trained, registered and insured
teachers in Scotland and to thousands of students of all ages and abilities, as
well as classes for those with disabilities, health problems, children, older
people and pregnant women.
Announcing the news Julia Bracewell OBE, Chair, sportscotland said “We are
delighted to recognise Yoga Scotland as the national governing body for the
sport in Scotland. We now have 76 recognised governing bodies in Scotland
covering a broad range of sporting activities. Working with our key partners,
including governing bodies, our aim is to provide more opportunities for people
to become involved in sport and develop an active, healthy lifestyle. We look
forward to continuing our good working relationship with Yoga Scotland as they
strive to develop the sport.”
Welcoming the news, Yoga Scotland Chairperson, Fiona McOwan said, “We are
absolutely delighted. It has been a lot of work over the last couple of years,
and it’s high time that Scotland has its own governing body. Now the real work
begins of course. Being a governing body is about providing a coherent voice for
yoga, a benchmark for quality training and the means to promote this wonderful
practice throughout the country. We have already begun to talk to other
organisations who also train yoga teachers north of the border, so that we can
begin to work together to offer safe and high quality training to the many
people who are enjoying the resurgence of this ancient science which offers
physical, mental and spiritual benefits to its practitioners.
Yoga Scotland has already begun to hold twice yearly meeting with the range of
yoga traditions in Scotland.
