Committee Area

The Yoga Scotland teacher training is a part-time course lasting for 500 hours over two years. At present we run two courses - in Edinburgh and Glasgow starting alternate years

Students explore a practical and theoretical syllabus that covers: anatomy and physiology (including common medical conditions), pranayama, history and philosophy of yoga and class management.

The teacher-training course is structured to give prospective Yoga Teachers:

bulletA solid grounding in the various classical postures and practices of Hatha Yoga
bulletAn acquaintance with some of the major eastern sources of yoga knowledge and their significance in modern life
bulletA basic insight into the anatomy, physiology and movement potential of the human body
bulletContinual teaching practice which is an integral part of the two year part-time course

Alan in Lotus PostureGraduates are awarded the Yoga Scotland Teaching Diploma. The diploma is currently recognised in Scotland and throughout the United Kingdom by agreement with the British Wheel of Yoga with whom we have an exchange diploma arrangement.

The main prerequisite is that you have been attending a yoga class for a minimum of two years, although you are strongly advised to take our Foundation Course, or the Foundation Course offered by one of the Yoga Scotland accredited organisations before applying.

If you have practised for under two years your application for a place on a training course is very unlikely to be successful.

The next course will be starting in Glasgow in September 2009. Application forms will be available in January 2009

If you want to contact our Teacher Training Administrator Linda Moodie you can do so by e-mail or by telephone (01224 697326). The course will also be advertised in advance in the "Yoga Scotland" magazine, copies of which you will receive if you have ordinary membership of Yoga Scotland.

In the meantime your best procedure is to continue attending a regular class, get to seminars whenever you can to experience different teaching methods and to read up on hatha yoga and the philosophy behind it. You might also want to consider taking our Foundation Course, particularly if you are new to yoga and have been practising for less than two years.

These steps will help you if you decide to apply for a place on one of our courses.
