This day aims to introduce teachers to this autoimmune condition, its symptoms and treatments and also its occurrence within the Scottish population.

We will explore:

  • How we can welcome those with Multiple Sclerosis into our general classes
  • How yoga can be of benefit in dealing with some of the common symptoms
  • How we can help those with MS, however they are affected, to adapt asana, pranayama, pratyahara, dharana and dhyana
  • Explore developmental and adaptive movements

Melanie has a special interest in this condition and has taught people with MS for over 20 years, she also has personal experience of this condition and its life changing impact as her husband has MS.

Melanie Cook began practising yoga in the early 1990’s, to try and improve a serious back condition. Her first yoga teacher introduced her to the Yoga For Health Foundation (YfHF) based at Ickwell Bury in Bedfordshire. After completing the Teacher Training with the YfHF in 1995 she then became a resident teacher at their residential centre. During her time there she continued her studies for the Remedial Teacher Training Course, which she completed in 1996. After leaving the YfHF she moved to Edinburgh, and then trained with the Scottish Yoga Teachers Association (SYTA) completing her Diploma in 1999.  She has continued her studies with various diplomas including a Level 3 Diploma in GP Referral.

Melanie has taught yoga to people with MS since her initial training with the YfHF, which specialised in yoga and yoga therapy for people with MS and other conditions. She teaches a mixture of yoga classes including specialised MS classes, 1:1 sessions and inclusive and accessible classes for those with long-term conditions and disabilities.
